The late Tammy “Pistol” Wilhite has been nominated to enter the White County High School Hall of Fame.
Athletic Director Terry Crain said the Hall of Fame committee will consider Wilhite during its yearly meeting.
“We do some research on the person,” Crain said. “Their contributions, not only to the school but to the community, and we consider a lot of things. We gather that information on all the nominees and then, the board discusses and votes.”
Crain said the committee will also work on improving the Hall of Fame. Current inductees are listed on a sign in the high school’s gymnasium or football field. Crain said the committee plans to have a screen installed in the gym’s trophy case that would display members by the end of the year.
“Our plan is to take each one of the hall of fame members and work with our media class to have it rolling across the screen with pictures and information about each one of the members,” Crain said.
Wilhite was a long time sports journalist covering White County athletics. Two White County graduates approached the board of education last month wanting the district to honor Wilhite’s life.
Crain said the seven-person committee considers coaches, players, administrators and community contributors once a year. Players must have been graduated for at least 10 years to be considered. Coaches are eligible after five years. Administrators and community contributors can be considered at any time.
