UC Beef Summit Coming To Hyder-Burks This Saturday

The Upper Cumberland Beef Summit is coming to Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavillion this Saturday starting at 8 a.m.

Overton UT Extension Agent Jason Garrett said that the multi-extension agency event will have a trade show, educational classes, and a free ribeye sandwich for attendees. Garrett said that the beef industry plays a huge role in the Upper Cumberland.

“It’s the number one agricultural commodity here in Overton County as well as the ones surrounding us,” Garrett said. “Our land in this area is rolling, it’s suitable for livestock production, and it’s what most farmers have on their farms. It’s beef cattle.”

Garrett said that the summit will have several experts on a wide variety of topics, from genetic information to economics, to managing heifers.

“We’re throwing in all the educational presentations, but we’re trying to have it more diversified having a trade show,” Garrett said “For example, we’ve got bull breeders setting up exhibits marketing their herd sires that are going to be for sale or they sell them yearly doing that. Or we have equipment like farm equipment dealers setting up. So we’re going to have tractors in there, probably some hay equipment, things like that. Also, we’ll have vendors like with livestock medicines, feeds, for example, the Ag One Co-Op here in Livingston is going to be set up showing what they have for sale.”

Garrett said that UT Extension offices has plenty of information available, but he wants people to come and get to learn it.

Garrett said that the event is free to the public.
