Volunteers with the American Cancer Society in DeKalb County are inviting community members to honor loved ones with their “Love Lights A Tree” program.
Coordinator Ivadell Randolph said that the goal of the event is to both raise money for research by the American Cancer Society as well as honor cancer survivors and their families.
“The memory board is to honor anyone that may or may not have had cancer,” Randolph said. “Whether they’ve passed on or are still battling cancer, but we do it in memory of a person or in honor of.”
Randolph said that for $5, the name of someone touched by cancer can be put on a special memory board in downtown Smithville. She said that this year, shop students at DeKalb County High School have created a brand-new board for names.
Randolph said that she first heard of the American Cancer Society just before 1986, when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She said that after several family members and loved ones she’s known have been touched by cancer in some form, she wants to work to honor them.
Randolph said that forms are available for name submissions at all four banks in Smithville, as well as several across the county.
