DeKalb Emergency Services Association Delivering Meals On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day will be a busy one for volunteers with DeKalb County’s Emergency Services Association.

Organizer Blake Cantrell said that the organization plans on delivering prepared meals to those in need. Cantrell said that the idea came from a desire to become more involved with the community.

“We live here, we work here, we really want to help the people that are here locally to us,” Cantrell said. “As well as across the county, that are maybe less fortunate or just kind of can’t get out and be other different places for the holidays.”

Cantrell said that between deliveries on Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve, volunteers bring some 600 meals to those across the community. He said that when it comes to the work, it’s a blessing both for those giving and those receiving.

“Even though it’s Emergency Service association we have volunteers and support from across the community. We have several people that are delivering, we have between 30 to 35 different routes that different people are taking and they’re going to these homes and they’re completely blessed by these experiences. We have people that come in that are cooking and plating and are getting ready for these things to go out. It’s just a blessing for everybody that is involved in this.”

Cantrell said that they start prepping around 8:00 in the morning. He said that the delivery drivers are sent out around 9:30, and they deliver until the meals are gone. Cantrell said that there are roughly ten to twelve stops on each route.

Cantrell said that they are glad to do the service and glad to help those in the community.
