L&N Caboose Transport To Baxter Depot Set For December 13th

The L&N Caboose will move from Cookeville to its new home in Baxter on the morning of Monday, December 13th.

Coordinator Don Prince said that the move will happen using two trucks and a crane.

“We have what they call a deep-well lowboy truck which will carry actually the box part of the caboose will lift off of the wheels,” Prince said. “And so we’ll put that part of the caboose on one truck and then we’ll pick the wheels up that the box sits on and put them on another truck and we go to Baxter and will offload it with a crane.”

Prince said that the caboose will travel down Highway 70 West with a police escort. He said they are hopeful that such a tedious move will be completed by the end of the day.

Prince said that despite some setbacks and plan changes, they are excited to be able to bring Baxter its first train car.

“You make a plan and you try to work the plan and if it doesn’t work out then you try something else. I’m just glad that it’s going to work out for Baxter and I’m real excited for them and then people down there have been really great and the railroad people that I’ve had contact with have been great so it worked out good. It’s taken a little bit more time, but you know that’s just the way it goes sometimes.”
