Paving Delayed In Sparta, Weather Deciding Factor On Start Date

Weather will decide if the second phase of Sparta’s repaving plan will begin before the new year.

City Administrator Brad Hennessee said the contractor was set to begin Monday, but the company picked up an extra paving job with the state.

“North Church, Quill E. Cove, the remainder of Turntable, Crosslin and the walking trail is what was phase two,” Hennessee said. “I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to start this week, because we’ve had good weather,”

Hennessee said the pavers will not arrive in Sparta for another few weeks. Hennessee described North Church Street as a, “Mess,” with a pipe bursting project leaving the road in a poor condition.

“Nobody wants that paved more than I do,” Hennessee said.

Hennessee said if the weather holds close to the forecast, the paving could be finished before winter begins. The road improvements are a part of Sparta’s long-term plan to repave all roads by 2026.
