Putnam Schools Approve Updated Agreement With Overton Schools

Putnam County Schools and Overton County Schools have renewed their agreement allowing students in the Wilson Community to attend Putnam Schools.

Putnam Director of Schools Corby King said that the last time that this agreement had been examined–during its creation in April 2008.

“The only change at this point is the students have to live in that Wilson zone,” King said. “They can’t live anywhere in Overton County and go to Wilson to get through this. They must actually live in the Wilson area of Overton County and go to Wilson Elementary through the 8th grade.”

King said that the new agreement takes care of a potential loophole that had not been addressed previously. Board member Kim Cravens voted against the agreement, calling it unfair. She said that there are several families that would like this opportunity, but are unable to take advantage of such a convenience.

“So just as I’ve said before, our policies, we don’t allow out of county students,” Cravens said. “I know we have maybe a couple of areas but just because it’s always been done this way it’s for convenience and the same convenience that they have a lot of other people would like and we don’t allow that so I don’t agree with it.”

The updated agreement will go into effect next school year.
