The City Baxter approved Chief of Police Danny Holmes to explore an agreement with the company Blue Line solutions.
Holmes said that the Chattanooga-based company will aid in preventing speeding in school zones using radar tracking.
“It will take a picture and they will actually send a citation out from them,” Holmes said. “And you know what I like about it is it’s a $50 fee. And it doesn’t go in the state of Tennessee, it doesn’t go on your record.”
Holmes said that an initial traffic study performed by the company showed that some 8,000 cars drive through Baxter on a daily basis. He said that out of all of those cars, they found some 1,200 cars speeding 11 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Holmes said that he receives several complaints about speeding in school zones and that this will hopefully decrease the number of people speeding.
“I get complaints every day about the school zones,” Holmes said. “Someone’s speeding, and it’s very dangerous. We want to keep our children and our motorists safe in the City of Baxter and this is just another tool to do it.”
Holmes said that the service will be completely free to the city. He said that the company will invest some $250,000 worth of equipment and efforts into the agreement.
Holmes said that the next step will be for the city to explore the contract, which lasts two years.
