TWRA will release a couple thousand rainbow trout into the Cane Creek Park Lake Wednesday.

Region 3 Stream Manager Travis Scott said the agency restocks the water to provide fishing opportunities each winter.

“The program started probably 20 years ago in Nashville and has since expanded to each region across the state,” Scott said. “We look for easily accessible public bodies of water ideally a lake similar to Cane Creek Park.”

Scott said the trout come from a hatchery at Dale Hollow Lake. Scott said the lake will be stocked once again in January, so anglers will be able to catch trout until early summer.

“It’s really a straightforward process as far as opening the valve and releasing the fish through a tube into the lake,” Scott said. “They’ll back down the boat ramp and have them all in the water in a few minutes.”

Scott said trout are used for restocking because the fish is readily available. Scott said the majority of hatcheries in the state produce trout.
