Smithville Marine Struck And Killed After Assisting Crashed Car In California


A Smithville native was struck and killed on Monday, near his station at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California.

20-year-old Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio stopped to help a wrecked vehicle on the interstate around 3:20 a.m.  A box truck crashed into Lucio and the two people he was assisting.

The 36-year-old driver and his 31-year-old passenger Lucio was assisting suffered major injuries and were transported to the hospital. Lucio was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lucio was a 2019 graduate of DeKalb County High School. He was a member of the Security and Emergency Services Battalion at Camp Pendelton. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.
