The Putnam County Volunteer Organization will have a collection drive at the Putnam County Fairgrounds for the tornado victims of Western Tennessee and Kentucky this weekend.
Director Randy Adams said that they are collecting clothes, toys, personal items, and more to load into a semi-truck and deliver to that community.
“We were in the same situation on March the 3rd,” Adams said. “And so many communities across the United States came together and provided us with things and helped our survivors get through those days and weeks and months ahead, and we want to give back.”
Adams said that the biggest needs will be new or gently-used toys for the kids. He also said that they will need coats.
“Because as we well remember, you don’t have a coat and you don’t even have a closet to get it out of,” Adams said. “And I know our survivors really enjoyed the fact that there were personal items like soap and toothpaste and toothbrushes that people donated to us. With it being Christmas, anything for the kids. Toys, coloring books, games, anything like that. Anything that you want to give, we’re going to get it out to those people and make sure it gets distributed.”
Adams said that they will not be accepting persihable items, and most food items get taken care of. He said that they want to deliver things that we really take for granted like blankets and towels.
Adams said that the collection will be on Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. He said that if other organizations are also collecting, they are welcome to bring their donations to the fairgrounds and have the volunteers deliver.
If you would prefer a monetary donation, Adams said to donate to the recovery funds set up by Mayors Randy Porter and Ricky Shelton.
