White Commission Approves Funding For Recycling Building At Landfill

A new recycling center will be coming to the White County landfill.

The county commission approved the $150,000 for the project Monday. County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said finding companies to take the county’s recyclables has been an issue.

“We have tried for years to basically partner with somebody, get a vendor, somebody to come and take the recyclables,” Robinson said. “Two or three months is about the most anybody does it, and they seem to go away and not make any money from it, so we’re going to take this in house.”

Robinson said the new facility will allow the county to sell and store its own plastic and cardboard. Robinson said the contractor building the center is aiming for a spring completion.

“This is an ongoing thing,” Robinson said. “Recycling is a tough business. Unless you got somebody that’s going to take your recyclables then you can’t recycle. So, we’re getting in the process now where we have control of that.”

The White County landfill is located off of Gum Spring Mountain Road. According to the budget amendment, the funding comes from the fund balance.

“It will be better for the county in the long run,” Robinson said.
