Candle Safety: Placement Key To Preventing Accidents

Candles may present fire dangers if you do not taking the right measures this holiday season.

Livingston Fire Chief Rocky Dial said the placement of a lit candle can prevent accidents from happening.

“Make sure that you are setting them on a surface that is non-combustible like paper or something like that,” Dial said. “Make sure to place them on something like a glass item so the heat won’t transfer.”

Dial said before going to bed or leaving your home, make sure the candle is put out. Dial said if you have children playing or several guests, keeping the candle unlit is a safe option.

Dial said most candle glasses do a good job containing the heat, but anything is possible. At the same time, Dial said keep your live Christmas trees well watered. Dry trees are highly flammable, especially with a lit candle around.
