State Representative Paul Sherrell said the election of school directors is something he plans to bring to Nashville Tuesday as the General Assembly reconvenes.
Sherrell said he first filed for the legislation last year.
“People would like to see their superintendents of school elected instead of appointed,” Sherrell said. “I cover White County and about 2/3’s of Warren and all of Grundy. A great big issue they are having in Grundy County is since I was elected in 2016, they are on their third superintendent.”
Sherrell said the current school director comes from Memphis, but locals believe that the community has candidates worth being considered. Sherrell said he will also bring feedback from his local constituents against a TWRA clear cutting project in White County.
“Concerns about maybe the way that we have worked on a project about TWRA and the way they are cutting timber around the Virgin Falls area,” Sherrell said. “That they would like to see something done about that.”
Sherrell said he expects education funding and redistricting to be an overall focus of the General Assembly.
