Sparta’s American Legion Post 99 begins a month long canned food drive this Friday.

Donations will be accepted at the American Legion building until February 15th. Post Commander Ron Lapierre said non-perishable food gathered will be distributed to homeless veterans in the area.

“Our mission as the American Legion is to help the veterans of our community,” Lapierre said. “Whether they are an American Legion member or not, I feel very strongly about helping them with this program.”

While the number may not compare to other areas, Lapierre said White County does have a small population of homeless veterans. Lapierre said he is working with state officials to make sure the food gets to veterans in need.

“This is the very first time that we’ve done it,” Lapierre said. “That’s why I called some people from the state to help us handle it. Once we get it and I have a bunch of veterans who are going to get trained, we’re going to try to do this as much as we can.”

Lapierre said members of the post will volunteer their time to receive the goods. Lapierre said he will even offer picking up the food in certain circumstances. Lapierre said other useful items in the winter are also accepted.

“Jackets, sleeping bags, whatever they can use,” Lapierre said. “Most of these veterans don’t want hand outs, so we are going to try to reach out to them and just say what do you need and here you go.”

The Sparta American Legion Post is located behind the White County Courthouse at 5 West Maple Street. If you know of a veteran in need, call 931-256-5023 to benefit from the food drive.
