Avoid Property Tax Interest By Paying This Month

It’s time to pay your property taxes to avoid extra interest costs once February passes.

Overton County Trustee Peggy Clark Smith said tax payers have several options to make payments.

“You can pay cash or check when you come in, or you can mail it in with a check,” Smith said. “We also have the capability to go online and paying your property taxes. You go to and clock on Overton County.”

Smith said if you use a credit or debit card, the processing company charges 2.75 percent. You can also use an E-check online with a $2.75 fee. Smith said a common mistake she sees this time of year is people thinking their taxes are already paid when buying property.

“When you’re buying property always check and make sure the property taxes are paid up or look at the closing cost on who is supposed to pay the taxes,” Smith said.

Smith said Overton County has a property tax relief program for veterans, elderly and disabled people. Smith said income would need to be less than $31,000.

“If there is anybody that thinks that they qualify for that, they need to come by our office,” Smith said.

Interest and penalty starts March 1 at the rate of 1.5% each month.
