Cookeville City Council approved an engineering services agreement for modifying its Cane Creek Substation.
Director Carl Haney said that the transformers to be upgraded are currently about two to three years out from their end-of-life, but they want to get the process started as quickly as possible.
“From what we’ve seen from the manufacturers to get that size transformer, most of them are giving us two to three year lead times,” Haney said. “So if we start that engineering process now, that process will tell us what we need and what sort of work needs to be done.”
Haney said that the engineer services are set not to exceed just under $200,000. He said that they expect the engineering process to take about one month.
Haney said that the substation provides power to three other stations in the city, so it plays a huge role in providing electricity to the city.
“Cookeville has five distribution substations that feed the whole city, “Haney said. “Three of those are what we consider the 69kv so they’re fed by 69,000 volts each. This substation and then the one that we have south, actually feeds those 69kv power to those three. So obvuousky that’we want to make sure we have a backup for it,” Haney said. “So if something happened either at Cane Creek or south, or something happened to those lines ”
