Staffing in the Pickett County Schools is returning to normal after seeing its highest COVID number since the pandemic began.

Director of Schools Diane Elder said the school system shut down for two days last month due to COVID cases among the staff.

“Our numbers are a little bit closer to normal,” Elder said. “Not quite there, but we are not seeing as many positive cases or quarantines as we were seeing a couple of weeks ago.”

Elder said at one point, 22 staff members were out between two schools.

Elder said the system also saw 32 positive cases among students. Elder said the spike in numbers has impacted the elementary levels, which has not been the case in previous years.
