Spencer Applying For Funding To Install Automatic Meter Readers

Spencer wants to install automatic readers for water meters in its utility district.

Mayor Mickey Robinson said the plan is to apply for a Community Development Block Grant worth up to $630,000 to make the project happen.

“If we get awarded this grant, it will be a great thing for this city,” Robinson said. “It will be radio reading is what we are applying for. It will save us on man power hours. It will make it a whole lot easier reading meters.”

The city of Spencer held a public hearing Thursday that kicked off the application process. Community input is required before filing for the funding. Spencer has until April 15th to submit its application.

Under the stipulations, 51 percent of the beneficiaries of the project must be considered low-income households. Projects must also impact at least 2,500 customers.
