Clay County Library Hosting Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration

The Clay County Library will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday Saturday in a public event recognizing the famous children’s author.

The free event lasts from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Library Director Alecia Burns said families can expect crafts, storytelling and snacks.

“They’re going to have the kids come in and make their own Lorax character with their own truffula tree,” Burns said. “We’re going to read a Dr. Seuss book and have a birthday cake and sing Happy Birthday to him since  he would be 118.”

Burns said she plans to read classics such as the Fox in Socks, Green Eggs and Ham and more. Burns said children may even get a special appearance from Thing 1 and Thing 2. Burns said the library wanted to host the event to remember the legacy of the Dr. Seuss.

“He brings the children’s imaginations to life with different characters and he shows the children how to step out of the box and see the world around them in a different light that keeps their mind engaged and lets them interact in different ways and know there is not one normal and you can have fun with the things that you read and you do.”

Burns said young readers will also have a chance to win a Kindle tablet Saturday. Burns said families can record the number of pages a child reads this week. Then, bring in the numbers to see who has read the most pages this week. Burns said donations are welcome to help fund the summer reading program.

“We actually secured a magician for the summer today with the donations that we get towards these events go to pay towards stuff like that,” Burns said.

The Saturday event takes place at the Clay County Library at 116 Guffey Street in Celina.
