For the first time in York Institute’s history, both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have a chance to “bring back the gold.”
That’s according to Jamestown Mayor Harvey Stowers. Stowers said that it says something about the student-athletes of Fentress County to be playing at such a high-caliber level.
“Just like this little community where we’re standing, they’ve won 10,” Stowers said. “Clarkrange has won 10, and they’re a smaller school. York’s a bigger school and they really got, what you might say more competition. There’s just competition in all of it.”
York Institute’s girls’ team will play against Westview in the Class 2A state championship game Saturday at 11 a.m. York won its only other state championship game appearance in 1984.
The boy’s team will play next week. Stowers said that he only has a few words of encouragement for the team.
“Just keep doing what you’re doing,” Stowers said. “Don’t get mad, get down there and play ball and bring back the gold.”
