Monterey’s engineering team working on a water and sewer project proposal in conjunction with Putnam County.
The town wants a portion of the county’s TDEC infrastructure money. Alderman Nathan Walker said the partnership would allow the purchase of a sludge remover for the water and sewer plants.
“We were not going to be able to afford one our own, so we’re pretty excited about that,” Walker said. “And what that is a sludge removal machine that is actually going to be portable, so we can use it at both locations.”
Engineer Nathaniel Green said the machine was a part of the new water treatment plant project but was removed due to budget constraints. Green said he estimates the equipment to cost $565,000.
“I believe they have a meeting on the 21st,” Green said. “As of right now, I plan on attending that meeting. I’d be happy to represent you guys on this.”
The Monterey Board of Aldermen approved Green to present the proposal at the county commission meeting Monday. Walker said Putnam County Commissioner Theresa Tayes has been involved in the process along with Mayor Randy Porter.
Putnam received $11.3 million dollars from TDEC to distribute as non-competitive grants. Putnam Commissioners have already approved joint projects with Algood, Baxter and Jackson County.
A proposal from Cookeville has yet to be shared.
