Sparta Public Works Director Explains Odor Near Sewer Plant

Several Sparta residents voicing concern about strong odors coming from the city’s sewer plant.

Public Works Director Dillard Quick said he wanted Sparta officials to know that nothing is wrong with the plant. The smell comes from nearby chicken litter.

“They’re putting it on people’s pastures or fields or whatever, but when it rains and they get in there and scoop that out and hull it out, then that smell is pretty horrendous when it gets around,” Quick said. “So if you get any calls, it is not the sewer plant.”

Quick said a local farm has a storage area near the plant that holds the material. Quick said about 15 people have called asking about the odor. Quick addressed the smell during Thursday’s Board of Aldermen meeting.
