Concrete has been laid for White County’s new recycling facility at its landfill.
County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the county will proceed with putting up the building that will sort and store recyclable materials from trash.
“White County has historically we’ve depended on outside contractors to handle our recycling products,” Robinson said. “The market for that stuff has been bad, and we’ve never had luck with our contractors, so we’ve decided we are just going to take this in-house.”
Robinson said he anticipates the new site to be operational in about four months. Robinson said the demand for plastic has started to come back, so the county stands to make a profit.
“When there is a market for plastic that means crude oil is up and that means gas prices are high,” Robinson said. “Plastic is a crude oil based product, so when those raw materials start to go up, there is a demand for recycling.”
Robinson said the site will also help prolong the life span of the county’s landfill. The $150,000 facility was approved by the commission in December of last year.
“White County has its own landfill, which is rare in the Upper Cumberland, so the more waste we can divert out of that landfill, the more air space that we have,” Robinson said.
