Sparta American Legion Hosting Vietnam Veterans Ceremony

The Sparta American Legion Post will hold a Vietnam veterans recognition ceremony Tuesday.

March 29, 1973 marks the day that combat troops left Vietnam. Post Commander Ron Lapierre said Vietnam veterans present will get a certificate signed by President Joe Biden and a commemorative pin.

“When they came back from the war, they were treated like nothing,” Lapierre said. “Nobody welcomed them. This is our opportunity to welcome them home to show them the gratitude for their sacrifice during that war and for all that they did for this country.”

Lapierre said this will be the first time the post has held this event. Lapierre said County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson and several Vietnam veterans will speak as special guests.

Lapierre said the ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the American Legion Building on Liberty Square. Lapierre said the event will end with a round of patriotic singing to honor veterans.
