The local Tennessee Disaster Response Team is seeking money to aid its efforts in helping disaster victims across the country.
Team Leader Ken Hall said that after they returned from their 4th call of the year, it became clear that rising fuel prices would make their work more difficult.
“It takes a lot of gas to move two trucks and two trailers to a disaster especially when it’s 350 to 400 miles away,” Hall said. “And you can do the math with the price of gas. So we don’t want to get down to where we don’t have enough money to respond.”
Hall said that when they go on calls, they do everything from chop wood to searching for missing people. He said that this most recent call to Pembroke, Georgia marks the organization’s 104th response over the last 15 years.
Hall said that a majority of the team are retired law enforcement and emergency personnel who want to continue serving those in need.
“I think it’s just the nature of a lot of those people who were in those professions to want to give, to want to help,” Hall said. “I think it’s just in their DNA somehow.”
