Overton County School System was the recipient of some $19,000 to get a new oven and steamer for Livingston Middle School’s cafeteria.
School Nutrition Supervisor Debie Taylor said that the brand-new equipment helps cafeteria staff serve hot, fresh food to students.
“If you’re wanting to keep something to where it doesn’t bake out and get hard, you want to keep it moist and fresh then the steamer part is essential,” Taylor said. “And then two, if you’re wanting to reheat something, you’re not wanting to cook it and dry it out any further, then the steamer is good. It’s just perfect.”
Taylor said that Livingston Middle’s old oven finally went out, so she decided to apply for the grant to hopefully give them an upgrade. She said that cafeteria staff has said that the new equipment is a huge plus to them as it is used every single day.
Taylor said that as the supervisor, she wants to do everything she can to make the lives of her staff easier. She said that way, the staff can do their best to serve their students.
“I wish I could do this for every school but most of the time they grant it one piece of equipment for each school,” Taylor said. “And since I have not bought any other equipment at the other schools I can’t apply for a grant there. But believe me, if we have to replace any other piece of equipment I’ll be writing for another grant.”
