Parents Can Help Student Testing Success At Home

While teachers have been busy prepping students for state testing this week, parents can play a part in their success as well.

Overton County Schools Curriculum Supervisor Melissa Savage said that ensuring students get a good night’s sleep and have a hearty breakfast the morning of are just some ways to help.

“Talk to them positively about the test and the importance of the test and the results of the test,” Savage said. “And just giving them words of encouragement.”

Savage said that teachers work had to prepare the students for what they’ll see on the test. She said that parents help students succeed by making sure they have the energy and the encouragement.

Savage said that parents have to walk a fine line between words of encouragement and making sure the students take the test seriously. She said it might be easier to talk to younger students because this is a new experience for them.

“But I think it’s pretty much the same advice for both of them,” Savage said. “And making sure that they’re on time for school, making sure they’re prepared. Also, making sure that they have all their materials ready to go so that way when the test begins they have no conflicts.”
