Jackson Schools To Workshop TCAT Course Options

Jackson County School Board will host a work session to discuss the relationship between the school system and TCAT Livingston and Hartsville.

Director of Schools Kristy Brown said her office was notified in December that the Hartsville campus would not be continuing its long-standing agreement due to rising costs. She said that they’ve since decided to continue the program for a short period while Jackson searches for other long-term options.

“We’re going to be discussing both of those contracts going forward for next school year,” Brown said. “And just making sure that we understand any changes that may be made to the contract moving forward as well as the options that will be available to our students. So we will be discussing the enrollment options for our students at both of these places.”

Brown said that the partnerships are instrumental to the Career Technical Education program her students utilize. She said that without the help of places like TCAT Livingston and Hartsville, they would be extremely limited on what they can offer students.

As of January, Brown said that they send approximately 60 students each year to TCAT Hartsville. She said that the current tentative agreement between the Macon Board of Education and TCAT Hartsville is increasing the cost per student from some $3,600 to around $6,000.

“We can’t provide all of those courses on our high school campus just facility-wise and financially to do that on our campus,” Brown said. “So it’s just great to have those partnerships that make courses available to students that we would not be able to provide to them otherwise so it just expands opportunities for them.”

Brown said that the work session will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Central Office with the regularly scheduled board meeting to follow.
