Spots are dwindling for Tennessee Tech’s annual Elinor Ross Freedom School summer program.

Program Director Dr. Janet Isbell said that the six-week program allows kids to experience things they might not otherwise get a chance to. She said it’s also a chance for students to see that learning can be fun.

“That learning is something that they don’t have to be afraid of or dislike,” Isbell said. “Also we try to instill in these kids that they can make a difference in their world.”

Isbell said that kids will take field trips and also do in-classroom learning. She said that the program is a mixture of literacy enrichment and other activities.

“We spend time in books talking about self and family and community and nation and world,” Isbell said. “We help kids learn about social action and education. And we hope that when they leave the program, they feel empowered to be change-makers.”

Isbell said the camp will be for students who have recently finished Kindergarten through 4th grade. She said that those students must qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Isbell said those who are interested in applying for the program at She said that the camp will run from June 8th to July 15th.
