Byrdstown has completed a project to restore a historic Gulf Gas Station into a museum.
Mayor Sam Gibson said the building has been named the “Byrdstown Historic Gulf and Pavilion.” Gibson said the town will celebrate the grand opening on June 3rd.
“It’s a thing for tourism,” Gibson said. “It’s a perfect, beautiful place for picture taking, and it’s right here in downtown Byrdstown. It is very impressive. It goes back and takes gas stations back like they were in the 50’s and 60’s.”
A ribbon cutting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Gibson said the event will include a free waterside, ice cream and kick off the summer free movie nights with a showing of “Cars.”
Gibson said the restoration would not have been possible without volunteer work and donations. The building will house a couple of 20’s and 30’s modeled cars, antique Gulf gas pumps and displays of historic automobile items.
“This is a building across the street from city hall that we purchased from the Mitchell family a few years back,” Gibson said. “Instead of tearing it down, we with the help of other volunteers from other county departments rebuilt it. We’ve also had a lot of donations for the stuff inside the building.”
“We’ve had a lot of people that has done things,” Gibson said. “This project got started with carriage rides and t-shirts. We had people help us raise money to go towards the materials.”
