It’s one of the most affordable ways to buy a home in today’s market.
The Cookeville High School Carpentry Class will put its class-made home on public auction this Saturday. Trades Instructor Randy Mansell said the 1,560 square foot home has three bedrooms, two bath and includes appliances.
“The money that our house bills will go back into my program, and next year’s students will be operating under the money that the class of 2022 made,” Mansell said.
Mansell said over 70 students worked on the project over the last school year. Mansell said by the time some of the students graduate, they hold the skills to build their own home.
“I have some seniors this year that have been in my class for four years, and they’ve taken the class every year,” Mansell said. “So when you think about it, these young men have built from start to finish four complete homes by age 17 or 18. That’s pretty incredible.”
Mansell the last three home have increased in price each year. Mansell said the profit allows the purchase of the best tools so students can build their skills.
“Our houses are bringing a lot more than they did five years ago,” Mansell said. “We have a lot more in them, so it’s a good thing. But with that being said, it is still a very very affordable way for someone to buy their first home.”
The auction begins at 10:00 a.m. at Cookeville High School. Mansell said as a past contractor, he ensures the home is built to code and inspected.
