For the second time this week, a rope rescue was required to save a person that jumped from a Fall Creek Falls waterfall.
This time a 17-year-old boy attempted an 85-foot jump off of Cane Creek Falls. Piney Volunteer Fire Department PIO Tiwanna Bricker said the rescue was the exact same scenario that occurred Monday with a some 20-year-old woman.
“I would ask if somebody saw people that looked like they were fixing to jump and say hey you know there is a lot of people that get hurt every year over here and they have to carry them out. It’s pretty dangerous, so we prefer you not to do it,” Bricker said. “Yesterday, we heard the one on Thursday that people were cheering that kid on.”
Bricker said the department typically conducts up to seven rescues at the falls each year. Bricker said having two in one week is not normal.
Bricker said jumping into water from that height is extremely dangerous and can be described as hitting concrete. Bricker said water levels are also low at the moment adding to the risk.
When asked about the need for more enforcement around the falls, Bricker said the area already has several signs discouraging jumping. Bricker said people just need to use common sense.
“People do get ticketed, but it seems like people ignore that stuff,” Bricker said. “It would detract the beauty of the area to put a fence around the area, and you couldn’t fence off the falls. I’m not sure there is much the state could do.”
