State Parks across the Upper Cumberland will host free guided hikes and trail building opportunities Saturday as a part of National Trails Day.
Rock Island Ranger Ethan Greene said the annual event is an opportunity to discover what the park offers while connecting with nature.
“This year were offering a two-process hike,” Greene said. “Our event is going to include a trail work day. We’re actually going to be working on the Blue Hole Trail. We’ll be down there trying to reestablish some of the hiking tread that’s along the trail.”
Greene said the trail is an interesting part of the park that goes under a waterfall down to the Caney Fork River. Greene said you can participate by registering on the state parks web page.
“Essentially, your accessing a section of the river that would otherwise be inaccessible if we didn’t have the trail there,” Greene said. “It includes a staircase and some metal grading trail path that allows you to basically walk through a waterfall.”
Beyond Rock Island State Park, Greene said any other state park will also be holding a trail event. Greene said even if you can’t make a scheduled event, all trails will be open this weekend.
“Just be sure to get out and move a little bit,” Greene said. “If you haven’t hiked this year, this is a great opportunity to discover some of our trails.”
Greene said this will be the 30th anniversary of the National Trails Day. Greene said at the same time, the state park system celebrates 85 years of service.
