Tennessee Tech’s Study Abroad Program ramping up after COVID travel restriction were lifted after two years.
Assistant Director Amy Miller said a flood of students expressed interest after the long wait. Miller said 35 students are studying abroad this summer and 15 this upcoming fall.
“Very happy with the participation this year, especially after COVID,” Miller said. “This just shows that not only are the students interested, but the parents are supporting them as well to go and that there is a lot less fear than going abroad.”
Participation has yet to reach pre-COVID numbers, but Miller said she anticipates the university to get back to the 250 yearly student average by the 2023 school year.
“We have students every year who have never been on an airplane before and so, it is super exciting that we have this much participation here and they are getting that experience,” Miller said.”As soon as they do go abroad, they are already planning their next trip.”
Miller said two students groups have already returned from a trip to Costa Rica and Paris, France. Miller said studying abroad benefits students in many ways such as communication and new learning experiences.
“The work places are looking for these kind of skills, and it also helps students to mature and be more independent,” Miller said. “It’s a growing up experience, as well.”
Miller said the university has several partners in Europe, Asia, Central and South Americas.
