UCHRA Sells DeKalb Group Home Property, Pays Off Loan With Profit

UCHRA has sold some 110 acres that used to be the site of a DeKalb County Group home.

Executive Director Mark Farley said the Indian Mound Residential Center property sold through online public auction for $675,000.

“Part of it was simply farm land,” Farley said. “There’s roughly 100 acres of farm land and that is just going to be used for farming. The other portion I think is just speculative. The person I think has been buying other pieces of property just looking to improve it and flip it.”

The property was sold to two buyers. Farley said the tracts were divided to separate the land from the existing structures. Farley said the auction received a fair amount of interest.

“Real estate as it is now, it is a hot commodity,” Farley said. “We had several people looking at.”

Farley said the profit will be used to pay off a loan for the Lakeside Resort in DeKalb County. Farley said the training facility at Center Hill Lake was sold at a loss under a past administration several years ago.

“It was designed to provide hospitality training in a number of different ways to train up that population,” Farley said. “A few years ago the agency decided to close that down. It was sold, but sold at a loss.”

Indian Mound Residential Center closed last year due to COVID. Farley said reusing the property for services was not an option due to the remoteness.
