White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson wants to change how the county operates its solid waste department.
Robinson said the current business model of the county’s landfill is not sustainable.
“That whole system has to be revamped,” Robinson said. “What that end project is going to look like I don’t know, but we have to change it. I’m going to be presenting next solid waste meeting some options.”
Robinson said the operation’s revenue is the issue. Robinson said the county does not collect trash from outside counties, so the only way to increase funds would be through fee increases.
“So no matter how you dice it up if you are only collecting a certain amount of trash, to raise revenue you have to raise fees on it,” Robinson said. “So, that’s another tax on White County citizens. We’re looking at options on revamping that whole system.”
Robinson said currently, no property tax goes to the department. A $5 fee on electric bills goes to the solid waste fund. Robinson said the county’s new budget overall is healthy except the solid waste fund.
“It’s worked good for 20 plus years, but it’s just kind of became obsolete,” Robinson said.
