White Co Accepting Proposals On Land Fill Operations

White County requesting company proposals to change how its landfill is operated.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the move continues his goal of revamping an aging business model.

“We’re asking for what it would look like if they ran it,” Robinson said. “How would that work with the citizens? Is it affordable? Do we need to maybe look at bringing outside trash to maybe offset that cost.”

Robinson said at this time, all options are on the table. Robinson said the current landfill operation is based on regulations created several years ago. Robinson said he would like an update before a new landfill cell opens.

“We’re getting ready to start a new cell in our landfill,” Robinson said. “It’s kind of like building a house. If you don’t start it right with a good foundation, then you’re messed up from there on. That’s why I want to make sure to start it right.”

Robinson said the proposal timeframe will close at the end of the month. Robinson said the county could explore changing the funding mechanism depending on the costs of the proposals.

“What we are doing now is not working,” Robinson said. “This business model has been great and served us well for thirty years or so, but it’s time to revisit that while also being good stewards of tax payer’s money.”
