Baxter Approves Southwestern Land Annexation On First Reading

Baxter approved on first reading the annexation of some 25 acres in the southwest part of town off of Highland Avenue.

Building and Codes Official Bob Lane said that the landowners have proposed using the annexed area for high-density residential housing, such as apartments.

“They’re renting them as fast as they can get them built, and if they’re houses, they’re selling them as they can get them in the drive, so the demand is there,” Lane said. “So I’m assuming as long as the demand is there they’re going to try to continue to supply that.”

Lane said that a plat for such construction had not been submitted for approval, but it could have the potential capacity for up to 100 apartments. He said that the city is currently undergoing major reconstruction of its sewer and water lines to ensure it can meet utility demands.

Baxter Aldermen also approved a 52-acre piece of land for annexation off Old Gainesboro Highway on second reading.
