Livingston Police Department is about halfway through cataloging its evidence inventory.
The Board of Aldermen heard an update from Interim Police Chief Ray Smith Monday night. Smith said they’ve gone through about 1,700 articles to individually verify and match with case numbers.
“You go back to the court system, you run it through the court system to see if the case has been adjudicated and everything is good,” Smith said. “And then you get a disposition on it and once you get the disposition on it, then you write it up and send it over to the judge and we have a write up of a destruction order and ask for to be able to destroy that product.”
Smith said the first phase of the process included some 21 items destroyed. He said it was a good sign the department got it right and was doing the right processes.
Smith said he estimates the last time the evidence was inventoried and adjudicated was some 20 years ago. Smith said he’s appointed two officers to be in charge of the evidence room with Chris Mayes as its Director and Jeremiah Ragsdale as the Assistant Director.
