Sexton: SRO Funding To Be Rolled Into New Funding Formula

A state grant to fund school resource officers at schools across Tennessee is in its last year, a concern to some school districts.

House Speaker Cameron Sexton said that according to the Department of Education, that grant money will be wrapped into the new TISA school funding formula.

“When I’ve talked to schools, their issue is the state hasn’t broken out what the base funding amount is so they haven’t seen it in there,” Sexton said. “But it’s our understanding that SRO is in the base funding for the new formula. So we’re working with the Department and with school districts to have a little bit more confidence that it’s in there.”

Sexton said because the Department of Education is rolling the grant into the formula, school systems should not expect less funding for SROs. He said they plan on continuing conversations to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Sexton said the nice thing about the TISA formula is that most systems in the state are getting more funding than they were previously. He said because there aren’t as many strings attached, schools can spend the funding on things they prioritize, such as more SROs.
