Rep. Williams Working With Farris On Ideas For School Safety Legislation

State Representative Ryan Williams working with Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris on legislation for safer schools.

Williams said they are in the early stages of exploring ways for state funding to fortify schools.

“We even looked into some ideas about a system by which you can have check points for SROs to make sure they are in a systematic review of the facility throughout the day much like punching in a time card at certain doors,” Williams said.

Williams said other ideas include window films so intruders cannot see inside a school and more cameras at areas that are harder to patrol. Williams said boosting safety resources for teachers also in discussion.

“There are several things that he and I are having discussions about that I think are important for the citizens of this community and across the state that we can do to expend resources to make our schools more secure so students and faculty can focus on the purpose by which they are there,” Williams said.

Williams said the renewed focus on school safety was a point of emphasis after recent national tragedies. Williams said he has not formalized any of the suggestions at this time.
