TWRA Free Hunting Day Returns This Saturday

Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency set to host its annual Free Hunting Day this Saturday.

TWRA Outreach and Communications Coordinator Mime Barnes said the day was created to hopefully inspire more people to get interested in the sport.

“We also see a lot of parents taking their child for the first time on that day,” Barnes said. “But various ages can get out there and try hunting on that day. And yes we have seen a lot of success, and many people reach out to us throughout the year asking what they need to do to get involved with hunting.”

This year, TWRA’s Free Hunting Day coincides with the start of squirrel season. Barnes said hunters will be able to hunt anything that it’s in season. Free Hunting Day also coincides with the Private Land Antlers and Deer hunt, which gives hunters an opportunity to harvest a buck with velvet-covered antlers in TWRA-sanctioned areas.

Barnes said while the hunting license requirement is barred for the day, hunter’s education requirements are still needed. She also said that any child under ten must be accompanied by an adult.
