Power Of Putnam Celebrating National Overdose Awareness Day

Power of Putnam will celebrate National Overdose Awareness Day through two events Friday afternoon.

Executive Director Bill Gibson said the first event will begin at 5:00 p.m. on the quad at Tennessee Tech. The second event starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Putnam County Courthouse.

“Families have been through unspeakable tragedy, and this is in the nature of a candle light vigil or a prayer vigil,” Gibson said. “We are not actually going to have candles. We are going to have purple glow sticks. It’s a time of quiet remembrance and prayer.”

Wednesday marked International Overdose Awareness Day. It is a day set aside each year to remember those who have died from overdosing and familiarize people with substance abuse. Gibson said events like this often help the healing process for families.

Gibson said for those that want to participate, the event at Tennessee Tech will have a remembrance walk to the county courthouse. Gibson said when it comes to overdoses, he wants to encourage people to act, seek outside help and to never take an unprescribed pill.
