Last week’s Cookeville High School incident serves as a good reminder to parents to ensure the school system has the most up-to-date contact information.
Communications Supervisor Hannah Davis said the school system uses texts and emails as the most immediate way to contact families in emergencies. She said text from students to parents can sometimes be misleading.
“They’re hearing a side of the story that is in the school so that can absolutely cause concern,” Davis said. “But you want to wait until ”
Davis said there are sometimes delays in communications as the system is collecting information. She said the system’s main priority is making sure students, faculty, and staff are safe, and then communicating that to families.
Davis said that most of the time, details of the events are covered by law enforcement as they go through their own processes.
“As we are being told what’s happening or as we see things unfold, we are able to communicate that out,” Davis said. “So sometimes there is a little bit of delay in communication, but that is because we are working to see how things are unfolding.”
Davis said that if any Putnam County Schools family would like to opt-in to text alerts from the school system, they can text “Yes” to 67587. To make sure your contact information is up-to-date, families can contact their individual schools. Davis said you can also check via the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
