The passing grade for Van Buren County student athletes has changed from a 70 to 60.

The update was included in a new policy passed by the school board. Director of Schools Cheryl Cole said students that are failing will also be required to meet with school officials.

“In the event that the athletic director is also the coach of a certain sport, that he or she must review their plan with the said student with the principal so there is two sets of eyes on it,” Cole said.

Under the rules, the head coach of the failing student athlete and athletic director would be responsible for creating a plan of recovery. Cole said each plan of action must address individual player needs.

“I think parents should weigh in too,” Cole said. “I think parents should be at these meetings or on the phone with them if they can’t attend.”

The changes were made after a lengthy discussion at last month’s school board meeting. Athletic Director Dustin Sullivan said he wanted the school board to be on the same page as state requirements.

Cole said the new passing grade follows TSSAA guidelines. Players in credit recovery will also not be TSSAA eligible at the varsity level until the course is complete.
