Fentress Elections Hoping For New Voting Machines

Fentress County Election Office asking the county commission to approve the purchase of new voting machines.

Election Administrator Joey Williams said the county’s 42 voting machines have been used since 2008.

“This year the state legislature mandated that by the year of 2024 all counties in Tennessee have a verified paper trail,” Williams said. “So that’s what we’re doing tonight is asking for that funding.”

A voter-verified paper audit trail means a paper record that is marked either manually by the voter or with the assistance of a device that the voter may check for accuracy before the vote is cast. Williams said the verified paper trail records will be kept in the elections office.

Williams said the county will bid out the machines and pay for them upfront to be reimbursed by the state.
