Sparta Contracts Out Power Pole Replacement Project

Sparta has contracted out some $200,000 of power pole replacements and wire work to update aging infrastructure.

Utility Manager Belva Bess said areas near Spring Street, Templeton Street, East Everett Street and the Sparta Highway 111 exit will be the focus.

“Each year we try to budget a certain amount of money for our worse areas that need upgrading or maintenance,” Bess said. “Most of these are going to be our double circuit poles that carry two circuits on them.”

Bess said wooden poles will be replaced with metal poles. Bess said the budgeted project was contracted out since the department does not have the man power and equipment to conduct the work.

“Hopefully they will last a lot longer than the wooden poles did,” Bess said. “It just stabilizes our infrastructure and be able to withstand. Everything just ages over time.”

Bess said the electric department will communicate any controlled outages from the work when the project begins. Bess said Sparta is currently on a the company’s waiting list.

“We just need to keep our infrastructure sound and make it where we can rely on the electricity as much as possible,” Bess said. “We don’t like outages anymore than any more of our customers do.”
