Jackson County Commissioners got an update on the Highway Department’s state aid program at its Monday night meeting.
Mayor Randy Heady said the program helps the county fund road projects. The most recent work was conducted on Salt Lick Creek Road.
“It’s usually at the discretion of the Highway Superintendent or he gives them multiple roads and they pick the road that needs it the worst, the state does, and they have to qualify it,” Heady said. “And then we get resurfacing done through state aid. It’s a helpful project.”
Resurfacing on Salt Lick Creek Road stretched from Highway 85 to the edge of Smith County in the west end. Heady said the local match was only about $5,000 or $6,000 for a project that cost up to $250,000.
Heady said he wanted to make sure commissioners were up-to-date on various projects going on in the county. He said in the past, important project updates like these didn’t always make it before the commission because of the low-cost impact on the county.
“So sometimes that doesn’t make it and we’re trying to do just a little bit better of a job,” Heady said.
In other business, the commission also received updates on the state of the Highway Department after the recent leadership change. Heady said the department’s fund balance sits at about $1.8 million at the start of new Road Superintendent Daniel Garrison’s term.
Garrison selected Robert Hopkins as his Interim Successor in case of emergency.
