New White Co Commission Wants More Information On Landfill Resolution

White County Commissioner Derrick Hutchings said he wants more information about the county’s landfill before making a decision on accepting out-of-county trash.

A resolution was considered by the full commission that would have allowed out-of-county trash Monday night. Hutchings made the motion to send the item back to the solid waste committee.

“I just thought it was a good idea to send that back to committee, because it was sent through the old commission,” Hutchings said. “So, I thought it would be a good idea for the new commission to review it a little further.”

Hutchings said he is one of five new commissioners appointed to the solid waste committee during the meeting. Hutchings said he would like to learn more about what the resolution would mean for the county and the guidelines that follow.

“It’s important,” Hutchings said. “We want to make sure we make the right decision. We want to fully understand what we are voting on and how it affects the county.”

If passed, the resolution would rescind an amendment to another resolution that prohibits the county from accepting outside solid waste. The proposed resolution states that in order for the county to accurately predict revenue and negotiate contracts the ban must be lifted.

The newly appointed solid waste committee is set to have its first meeting in October.
